Beverages Research
Here are three moodboards that I created, each displaying different beverage that I researched that I could design for. The first moodboard at the top is research on mocktails. The second moodboard in the middle is research of juice. The last moodboard on the bottom are research on tea. Through feedback, I went with the bottom moodboard to move forward with.
Objectives
Design packaging to stand out with different flavors to select from and unique designs along with a story to back it up. As well as showing that this is a sweet product with right level of strong taste of flavor(Which is very important).
Target Audience
Young, working professionals, married or single, ages 30+, with a large amount of disposable income. This group has an appreciation for the finer things in life. They enjoy trying out new gourmet products, and wouldn’t hesitate to put something in their cart based on great packaging. They like to entertain and throw cocktail parties. They watch the Food Network, and read food magazines and blogs. They believe food = fashion. My aim is also towards individuals that wants to try something new like Bubble/Boba tea before others.
Moodboards
I created three more moodboards to help with the design process by giving me some possible directions I could take. The moodboard on the top is a simple design with little to no illustrations present, with the type logo being the main visual. For the moodboard on the bottom left is a more playful feeling with colorful visuals and bright colors. And finally, the last moodboard on the bottom right is a space like design with a night sky color palatte and visuals along with giving an magical/enchanting feeling.
Mind map/Word dump & Drink Names
Before beginning the sketching process, I first did a mind map to give some ideas for sketches. With the word list, I listed flavors, logos, colors, and taglines. Then I branched off from each words with more things that connected to the word. I also created a small word dump with feelings, images, and feelings. Along with the mind map and word dump, I created ten possible drink names. Some names have things relating to the night sky, a season, and things present in boba.
Font Research
I began to do work on some font research for possible fonts options for the possible boba tea name, slogans, labels, and the information. I wanted to find a font that was beautiful, playful but still legible. Through the search, I found 15 possible font options that I could use that had the feeling and look I was aiming for. But while I wrote out the name, I also took screenshots of each font to give an example of what they look like with ‘Boba Tea’.
Sketches #1
Using the the mind map, I sketched out 18 total sketches, 6 sketch design from each moodboard that I created. I created three new names for the beverage by using the words from the word dump. In these drafts I sketched out what the design would look like with a strawberry flavor. In the first set are simple designs with elements of strawberry being present. The second set uses illustration in a playful sense with the text being moved around. While the last set incorporates some starry elements like the strawberries are enchanted/magical.
Sketches #2
After getting some feedback, I took three of the strongest designs from each set and refined them further into another round of sketches. For the first set, I refined sketches #1, 3, and 6 by adding more boba pearls to the first and making the strawberries bigger in the second. While the third design had the straw removed and more pearls. In the second set, I refined #1, 2, and 4 by adding more elements like the pearls in sketches #2 and 3. And increasing the strawberry size in sketch #1. Finally for the third set, I refined the sketches #2, 3, and 4 by adding some strawberries in sketches #1 and 2 to show this is strawberry flavor. And straighten the strawberry and remove the smaller stars in sketch #3.
Option #1
I began turning three of the designs in digital drafts by selecting one design from each set that felt the strongest. For this design, I went with sketch #1 from set three. I made the background a gradient of blue and purple with yellow four-sided stars present. I drew a strawberry behind some clouds to look like it was rising from the clouds. The clouds are lighter shades of reds to match with the strawberry. Then I placed the name on one line in a white color with the flavor being under it in all uppercase. While the oz/ml information is at the bottom in a light font and smaller size.
Option #2
In this design, I went with sketch #1 from set two. I used the rectangle tool to make a rectangle for the name and flavor in pastel red. Then, I drew a strawberry on the left to take up almost half of the layer. I didn’t use any outlines on the strawberry but used a darker shade for a shadow effect like for the leaves, stem, and behind the strawberry. Then I placed the white types ‘Magical’ sideways while ‘Boba Tea’ beside it normal with the with the flavor being at the bottom. While the oz/ml information is on the strawberry in a light sans serif font and smaller size.
Option #3
In this design, I went with sketch #2 from set two. I made the background in pastel red. Then, I drew six strawberries in a circle shape and placed around the design to look like boba pearls. I didn’t use any outlines on the strawberries but used a darker shade for a shadow effect like for the leaves and stem, while using a highlight color for the seeds. Then, I used ‘Enchanting’ instead of ‘Magical’ in all uppercase with ‘Bubble Tea’ under it. I also placed the flavor underneath but put some space between the two. While the oz/ml information is located in the bottom right corner in a light sans serif font and smaller size. Instead of using white for the design, I used a dark purple color for the type.
Logo Drafts
Using the feedback given about the digital drafts, I took options #2 to refine some more and make more two more flavors, which are coconut and mango. I used the design for the strawberry flavor as a based for the other two flavors so they all match. In the designs I added a strip of color near the bottom in a color that was in a color from the flavor with the flavors name and OZ/ML inside of it in a bold serif. Then, I replaced ‘Magical’ with ‘Enchantea’ and placed them on the flavor illustration sideways. I placed ‘Boba Tea’ onto one line with the slogan underneath it, with some space. On the back, I added ingredients and a little history about Boba Tea onto the back along with the name and website. Along with the bar code and nutrition facts, which is transparent. I also took the circle design from option #3 and made a coconut and mango variant, then added them to the back like bullet points.
Final
In the final designs, I moved the flavor illustration more to the right to take up half of the design and did the same to the back to look like it’s wrapping around the can. I also made ‘Enchantea’ by logo for the beverage by adding a shadow effect to it and placed it where ‘Boba Tea’ was originally located and placed ‘Boba Tea’ sideways in a big type size and in all caps. I changed all of the type to a sans serif and made ‘Boba Tea’ the flavor name, ingredients, and OZ/ML set in bold. I also centered the flavor names in the color strip. On the back, I placed the logo at the top of the left side in a bit smaller size. Then, I center aligned the type, made it a bit smaller, and all capped the ingredients while keep in the history normal. I moved the nutrition facts under the ingredients along with the bar code, which is now transparent, and the website. On the coconut design, I changed the white strip to brown and made the holes circles. While for the mango flavor, I made the mango a orangish yellow color and made a light shade of it for the other half so the white type is visible.
